problem turning-off

i really dont know if thats the right place for this kind of question. ive tried ubuntuforums that often is useful for me but this time it wasnt.

i have kubuntu edgy, dell inspiron 6400 intel centrino duo.
if i halt or reboot through kdm, its ok. but directly from kde it doesnt work! sometimes reboots, generally no. never halts...

whY?!?!?!? some1 help plzzzz
thanks

EDITION
what i need to discover is wich commands kdm use to halt and reboot, where this is described and the same for kde!!! the developers who made it must be somewhere.... if theyre not in this forum, where can i find them??? or some1 who knows it... ?(

RE: problem turning-off

I you noticed there is a section for Dell on the ubuntu site. Seems that some of the dell products are not linux friendly.
Recently installed kubuntu 7.04 and 7.10 on a friends pc and it's having the same problems. However on my system (HP) with the almost identical hardware, they both work great.
The solution on ubuntu was to lauch with kernel option reboot=b or reboot=r, you may want to look it up on the site for the details.
