Wireless network not seen in KDE

I have a wireless network that works perfectly with both my mac and this computer in windows (i am dual booting). kde does not see the network, and neither does gnome. i have tried to set it up using kwifimanager with no success. under network settings roaming mode is enabled. any ideas what i am doing wrong or what i need to do?
