Installing KDE4

Im trying to install kde4 following the guide here http://techbase.kde.org/Getting_Started/Build/KDE4_Alpha_1

qt installs fine.
kdelibs build fine, but trys to install to /usr/local rather then $HOME/kde

running echo $KDEDIR returns $HOME/kde.
so Im not sure what the problem is, any ideas whats going wrong ?
