Kontact & screwy SMTP

I can't seem to lock down the problem here. It seems i'm getting inconsitent behavior when trying to send email.

after i send a message it goes to the outbox and sits there. I get an "unrecognizable transport protocol" message when trying to send the queued messages. I am set up through SMTP and have all the settings correct.

i tried changing ports and everything....still no sending.

any ideas?
