Downloaded Files do not show up on Desktop but are in /$home/Desktop

Downloaded Files do not show up on Desktop but are in /$home/Desktop

I see this is in as a bug, but was not addressed...

If i download new files to the desktop from Firefox or Thunderbird, Lotus notes etc. The files can be seen in the /$HOME/Desktop folder but not on the desktop.

To make them visible i can do Right Click --> Create New --> Text File Then they show up (along with my new file)

It seems that whatever is "watching" the Desktop folder to populate the desktop is not catching the downloads.

any ideas where to start looking??

KDE Version 3.5.6-3.el4
