newb needs help

Sorry about the vague title but I am absolutely clueless as to what IM is.

I understand it is chatting in real time.
I understand I can talk to friends who are also IM users
I can open Kopete
I have a yahoo account and use firefox to browse.
I opened the kopete wizard and chose "protocol to connect yahoo"
entered user name
closed wizard with "connect" on finish

Am I connected? how do I tell?
I can connect to my email but is this IM?
If I click on add account who do I put in. I don't know anybody who IMs.
Who is there? Where are they?
Where do I type anything in?

When connected, kopete shows the icon of yahoo colored, when not connected, it's grayed out.
You can also right click on the kopete icon in your system tray and change you status.

I can connect to my email but is this IM?

Dunno what you mean :)
If you click on the icon in your system tray, kopete will popup.
it's main window shows the persons you have added to your yahoo-account and what their status is (online, offline, etc..)
click on a person to start a chat with him/her


If I click on add account who do I put in.

you add the account information for the person you want to add to your contactlist for IM.


I don't know anybody who IMs.

Well, to be able to chat via IM, you should get to know the account names of your friends that have yahoo as well and like you to chat with them.


Where do I type anything in?

First you need to add other contacts to your list.
As soon as you have done that, you simply click on someones name in your list and kopete will open a chat window.
