kmail: "starting tls failed"

Hi,

I've been running OpenSUSE 10.x for some time, using KDE kmail with TLS on the server. I installed 10.2 (KDE 3.5.5 release 45.2, KMail 1.9.5) on both my client and server systems, and kmail fails to negotiate TLS. An alert pops up saying "starting tls failed". Thunderbird works fine. I think I've seen other postings about this, with solutions of installing kmail from OpenSUSE 10.1 onto 10.2, or upgrading openssl. Is this caused by kmail or openssl? Does anyone have the fix for this?

Thanks,
==Leonard

p.s.
I'm running UW IMAP on the server, from the 10.2 distribution.

Well, all I can tell you, is that I had the same problem after my upgrade from SUSE10.1 to openSUSE10.2. "Starting TLS failed", but only with one server, which is running Mercury/32. I could connect to other servers without problems (using TLS) (one of these servers is running uw-imap, I don't know wich software the other server uses).

So I installed the openSSL-packages from SUSE10.1, everything works fine now. I did once update openSSL after there were updates available for openSUSE10.2, but this did not solve the problem. So I have to stick with the openSSL packages from SUSE10.1.

Edit:
uw-imapd version is 2004g
Mercury/32 version is 4.01b

RE: kmail: "starting tls failed"

Hi @ll:
I`m having the same problem with postfix and tls in my pc with opensuse 10.2 clean installed.
Is this a kmail bug?
I`ve looking for in google and kde-bugs and this is the only reference i`ve found about this.
Firtsable i thought it was a problem on my default opensuse postfix configuration but i probed whith mailx and thunderbird and worked fine.
If try to unistall openssl libraries you can imagine how many dependecies fail, and in my less experience i think i`d better won't uninstall that.

Do you think it would be right to post a bug?
The matter is that i don't have many experience about that (better said none experiece) and don't know how to clearly explain to developers...

THX

RE: kmail: "starting tls failed"

I think it would be great if you reported it. I don't know if it is technically a bug, but it is an incompatibility at least. In my case, I switched from UW IMAP to dovecot (SSL instead of TLS).

I don't think that this is a bug in KMail. Try installing the openSSL packages from SUSE10.1. This should solve your problems.
openSSL
openSSL-devel

@ag
You do not need to uninstall the openSSL packages. You may "update" your packages with the "rpm" command. Something like "rpm -U --oldpackage /path/to/openssl/package.rpm" should do this.
