Backup, Restore & Migrate KDE Profile & Application Data

Howzit Folks?

I've tried googling for info on backing up, restoring & migrating of kde profile & application data with little success finding what I'm after. I'd like to ask the venerable forum the following questions:

1. Is there a tool, utility or application within kde for backing up, restoring & migrating of kde profile & application data? If not, why not?

2. Is it possible to specify globally where kde profile & application data is actually stored?

3. Where does the kde profile & application data actually reside?

4. What is the best way to backup, restore & migrate kde profile & application data?

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers
Aztrix

All application data should be stored in ~/.kde
kmail used to use ~/Mail for email storage, but since kde 3.4 or so also uses ~/.kde

Backing up/restoring that directory restores your previous kde profile, including application data.

kde also stores stuff in /tmp/kde-username and /var/tmp/kdecache-username.

you can define the location of ~/.kde with the environment variable
KDEHOME

For example, put export KDEHOME=~/whatever in ~/.bashrc or /etc/profile to make kde use the directory ~/whatever, in stead of ~/.kde

More information can be found in the user guide of kde that ships with the desktop, or on internet at http://docs.kde.org
