OK, I've taken a quick look at /usr/share/apps/kopete/styles/Gaim.xsl, and I'm not sure where to make my changes. The problem I am trying to solve is that messages sent to me via IRC (that is, messages that are directed to me by starting with "myname:") are hard to read because the text color is too similar to the background color. Any pointers on where I need to make my changes?

Try to change lines 77 or 81 to another color.
I tried entering the color codes on those lines into an HTML color calculator, and got back blue and red. What I am seeing on messages sent to me looks like black text on a dark green background. So I don't think those are the key values.
I do see a reference to "darkgreen" on line 34, but that looks like a foreground color.

As for a good style - try the Psi style - similar to Gaim but cleaner.
Thanks, I'll take a look.
Using Psi does removes any special highlighting from messages addressed to me. That does solve the problem of the messages being unreadable. But it also means the messages directed to me are not highlighted, making them harder to spot.
So I guess I'm still looking for a solution that:
1. Highlights messages sent to my nick
2. Uses highlight colors that are readable
I checked the "colors and fonts" tab, and notice that the settings are:
Base font color: black
Background color: white
Highlight foreground: white
Highlight background: dark green
So it looks like for highlighed messages sent to my nick, the Gaim style is using the Base font color, with the Highlight background. Is it possible to edit the xsl to use the Highlight foreground with the Highlight background?
For now, I've managed to work around the problem by changing the Highlight background color from dark green to a very light green. Now messages sent to my nick are highlighted, and I can still read the black text.
