Sub-pixel hinting

I'm a new Linux user, using Kubuntu for about two months. I have done a lot of reading about fonts in Linux but there is one thing bothering me.

The X documentation says that sub-pixel rasterisation can be turned on by editing the .fonts.conf and enabling the 'rgb' setting. I have tried that, as well as enabling the 'Use sub-pixel hinting' option in the fonts dialog. Still, running the command

xdpyinfo -ext RENDER | grep sub-pixel

indicate that sub-pixel rasterisation is not turned on:

Screen 0 (sub-pixel order Unknown)

Does anybody have any idea of what is wrong?

Thanks in advance

/Fredrik
This is Linux country. On a silent night you can hear Windows reboot.
