KDE, GUI/CL, connecting apps

I have just installed a SimplyMEPIS 6.0 w/ KDE 3.5.3

Experimenting, I loaded a text-to-speech application (kttsmgr) and RSS reader (akgregator). If I set up to get an RSS feed, manually I can have the RSS item, say local weather, spoken by kttsmgr by selecting an "say it" icon in akgregator.

With all the modularity and flexibility of Linux & KDE, isn't there some way I could automate this?

It would be great for Linux to act like a smart alarm clock, issue an alarm sound at a certain time, grab the local weather and maybe some news headlines and read them.

Suggestions welcome.

Thanks,
G
