Hi I have an old laptop (Pentium II, 128Mb RAM and an Intel EtherExpress Pro 10/100 PCMCIA network/modem card) that I am trying to set up to give to someone.
I have just installed Mandriva 2007 (Linux 2.6.17-5mdv) on the system and, although it is fairly slow, it seems to be working fine. I was astonished to see that it even detected the modem OK, but something in the kppp connection seems to be killing the system (ie. totally unresponsive and hard reset required).
Sometimes, it dies whilst attempting to log on, but usually, I can connect successfully to my ISP before the problem occurs.
If I leave the system connected without doing any I/O, no problems seem to occur.
I can ping google quite happily and I can view a few pages with lynx, but if I try a graphical browser (firefox 1.5, konqueror ?.?), as soon as a couple of requests have been made, my whole system freezes.
If I SSH to a server I control, then after approximately a page of text, the system dies.
It appears to be the data (either into or out of the system) that is killing it. I'm not sure what to do to find out what may be causing the problem, but if someone knows what might be causing this (and better still how to fix it), I would be very happy to hear from you :-)
Kind regards.
Jim McLachlan.
