KDE 3.5.4 - Control Center blank, K Menu blank.

Hey,

I'm a first time poster, somewhat of a lurker. :)

Anyway, I'm running Slack 11, and I decided to install Slack's KDE & QT packages.

I installed them into a directory under my home directory, and have exported the proper KDEDIR, QTDIR, XDG_CONFIG_DIR, PATH, etc. environment vars.

Everything was working spiffy after I ran through the config wizard, and set up everything nicely. The machine stayed up for 6 days or so, and I was editing the K Menu. I saved my changes, it took considerably longer than usual, and upon the next run of `startx` after a reboot, KDE all of a sudden lost my K Menu, and lost the Control Center's menu for configuring things like Background, Style, and so on.

I've read, googled, and reinstalled. I've removed all the possible sycoca caches from /tmp, /var/tmp, and removed my $KDEHOME & ~/.local/. Those things haven't fixed the problem. Things I read seem to point to an XDG problem, but I have very little idea of how to *fix* it, because I've exported the proper variables, and I believe my menu files are fine.

(The kcm modules are all there, btw.)

So I'm basically at a loss. I like KDE, but I need to be able to configure it for it to be _useful_. :)

Any thoughts? Ideas? Similar experiences?

Thanks!
