konqueror painfully slow text input in textareas

I was going to try to answer another question here, but when I started to fill out the textarea for the body of the post, the input goes extremely slowly, and I have to wait for the characters to catch up as I type. I am running on an old PII-450, but it's got 1GB of RAM, and nothing else runs this slowly. It's almost unusable. Is there anything I can do to speed it up?
Konqueror 3.5.2 on Ubuntu Dapper.
