Files to backup

I am trying to find out which files might contain the following information:

1. in Contacts - the file which keep the details of categories
2. in Kmail - the file that keep the details of passwords for e-mails

It's in the VCF files itself: ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf

It depends if you use KWallet or store them in the KMail configuration file. For KWallet: ~/.kde/share/apps/kwallet/kwallet.kwl and for KMail: ~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc

Note that it's recommended to backup the whole ~/.kde directory, such that every KDE related setting or data file will be stored.

Thanks for the information.

I had hesitated to re-install the whole .kde directory because on a re-instalation you may not install all the same applications. Would I be right in thinking that if you do re-install the whole of the .kde directory any new settings would simply overwrite the old ones?

If you already have worked on the new installation: yes, it will overwrite your settings. But it certainly can't hurt on a fresh install.

BTW, would you know what causes the error message "Could not connect to host localhost"?

Although it does not seem to be causing a particular problem, I get this when I do a manual download of e-mails.

Then you have a Receiving account set in your KMail settings, trying to get local mail. If you don't need local mail you can just remove that account from the settings.
