I have a small network connecting several machines. Each of the machines has its own static IP (192.168.x.x), hostname etc. All running Debian. All the hostnames and IPs are in an /etc/hosts file on every machine. The network is connected to a firewall and ADSL modem. Ping etc and connecting to the Internet works beautifully.

/etc/resolv.conf contains the IP addr of the firewall.

/etc/host.conf is:
order hosts,bind
multi on

I installed Apache on one of the machines to develop php for a website. Mozilla and Firefox access the web pages and images from the machine quickly and smoothly. Konqueror does not. It spends ages resolving "http://copper/index.php" to 192.168.1.22 and then does the same for every single image!! I can see the modem light flickering as it pointlessly sends DNS requests to my ISP. Why is it ignoring host.conf and not using the hosts file?

From what I could find searching this site it appears to be a bug in KDE concerning the IPv6 resolver. Is this correct? But why does it not affect Mozilla or Firefox?! Is using short names like "copper" to blame?

It's frustrating as I really like developing using Konqueror. How do I fix this or work around it?

edit: It appears to be DNS related because if I use "http://192.168.1.22/" accessing the page is lightning fast. I've been using this but it's a bit ugly and messes up my cookies. I just like to know why only Konqueror is doing this...
