I've been posting on Debian users forum for ages with no solutions. Finally someone told me I'd do better by coming here. So, here I go...

No reliable connection methods.

1. I installed Debian and in the process I may or may not configure ppp. It doesn't seem to make a differance.

2. After installation I perform the following steps as I was told to do by others...

a. Create /etc/resolv.conf file for DNS numbers. File may be left empty.

b. /etc/chatscript/pap Uncomment 'noauth'.

c. /etc/ppp/options Change 'auth' to 'noauth'.

d. /etc/ppp/peers/ Change permission to allows read/write.
/etc/ppp/peers/kppp-options Change permission to allows read/write.
/etc/ppp/peers/kppp-options Uncomment 'noauth'.

e. /usr/bin/kppp Change permission to allows read/write.

3. Then I run pppconfig.

4. I then configure kppp as root and as regular user. Each one usually acts differantly then the other. They used to work but then after time and various differant installation they work hit n miss and lately don't work at all.

5. Then I discovered pon and poff. They worked great for a while but later became undependable and now don't work at all.

6. Next, I discovered wvdial. It worked well for a little while also and later became unreliable. However, I am using wvdial right now. I configured it and connected with it by using webmin. But it too is unreliable. It took 6 tries to get reliably connected this time.

Ok, I'm all yours. Please tell me what you need to know, what I need to check, what should be in what files, etc, etc.

Maybe I am screwed up on the proper proceedure for configuring dialup.
It seems to me you should be able to do 1 configuration and thats it but as I said, I configure at installation, then I configure with pppconfig then I configure kppp.

By the way. Its not my phone line. Winblows connect every time.
