Language problem; japanese to english

Hi,

I'm new to linux, kde, etc but reasonably know my way around computers.

I'm in Japan on a research project and I'm connecting to a linux box with exceed software on my pc. I can connect and run the kde interface but everything is in Japanese. I realize that I can set the language in the kde control panel but that is in Japanese or, even worse, garbled. Is there way to set the language by changing a variable in a shell script?

If you offer help, then please try to be specific since I'm new to linux and its machinations.
