compiling kdebindings without kde

In an attempt to use ruby http://www.ruby-lang.org/ with qt I was pointed to qtruby and smoke by someone on the ruby-talk mailing list. qtruby and smoke are part of kdebindings. The README implies that it's possible to compile smoke and qtruby without kde. Simply, how can I compile smoke/qtruby without kde? I've been driving myself insane trying various way all day, but I don't think I'm formilar enough with autoconf.
