If I try to set the background using right click, configure desktop, background it doesn't do anything on my system. I would like to have this working as at one time I was using it to cycle through my backgrounds.
I don't know when I broke this and if it's a configuration issue or just that I'm lacking some package. The configuration screen comes up just fine though, it just doesn't do anything (it does show the picture when I select it in the preview).
The only way I set backgrounds now is by dragging the image and using "set as desktop background" which does work..
I have already tried getting help at gentoo forums (the distro I'm using) with no success after a couple of different threads on the subject.
I am using kde 3.5.3 (split ebuilds rather than monolithic, so maybe I'm missing a package that used to be pulled in, or is still an old version? )
I am also using compiz instead of kwin, but I'm not sure if that is the issue as this also occurs in normal X with kwin when I'm not using Xgl.
Thanks!
EDIT:
needed to delete my .kde/share/config/backgroundrc file
Works fine now, apparently some kind of config file corruption, didn't know about this file or where it was so took me awhile to fix myself.
