trash bin speed

I have a question for the community I have not been able to answer with Konqueror help or the KDE user guide. Why when using the KDE trash bin does the "empty trash" option run so slowly? A progress dialogue appears and remains for 30 seconds or so, even when the files in the trash are small. By contrast, when I use the "shift delete" option, even the largest files are immediately erased. Any explanations?
