Kopete not showing Devices

Hi all,

I've just recently bought a Logitech QC Pro 5000, and after some actionpacked fun looking through various websites to find out how to get it to work under SuSE 10, I've compiled the UVC drivers needed for this model and they are loading happily. As far as I know, this is all I need to do.

But Kopete is not showing a Devices menu when I go into the config, thus I cannot use the webcam.

Am I completely missing something here? Do I need to do anything to Kopete so that it recognises webcams?

I'm running KDE 3.4, Kopete 0.10.3, and the uvcvideo module is loading v4l1_compat, videodev and v4l2_common modules (not sure how to check their versions).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Matt.

You need a more recent version of kopete, I guess. Take a look at the releases page of Kopete: http://kopete.kde.org/releases.php

I think you need Kopete 0.11 or later to have support for webcams included. But 0.12 (even if still beta) is probably the better choice.

bauerfichtner - you were right, I need a more recent version. I installed the 0.12 Beta 1 for SuSE 10.0 RPM and the Device menu appears. Although, it crashes as soon as I click it!

Slowly getting there... is there a way of finding out why it crashed?

I can't tell you exactly why it crashes. Perhaps it is a bug in 0.12 beta1. I remember that I had this problem with the svn-version, but it is fixed in svn now.

I would recommend trying 0.12 beta2 or svn.
svn instructions may be found here: http://wiki.kde.org/tiki-index.php?page=Kopete+XHTML%2BCSS

Does Kopete only crash when your webcam is connected or is it also crashing when you access the device configuration dialogue without the webcam being connected?

Hi bauerfichtner

Well I just tried to Make .012 beta2, and it bombed out claiming it needs QT 3.3 >, which is nice considering I have 3.3.4 installed.

Is there something I should be doing to make it recognise the libs I have? Or is it's beta status too obvious and I'd shouldn't expect it to work happily?

Matt

Do you have the development packages for qt3 installed? For SUSE, they are propbably called qt3-xxx-devel. Make sure that you have them installed.

And the beta version should work quite well, as well as svn.

Good luck!

Same issue here. Using 0.12_beta 2. My cam is a Creative Ultra NX using the spca5xx driver. Works fine with other webcam apps but not kopete so I know it's not my cam nor drivers.

I have configured udev to create /dev/video0 with a symlink to /dev/v4l/video0 as well but this doesn't seem to help.

Any ideas?
-- rm -fr /etc/whitehouse

What exactly is your problem? Does Kopete crash when you access the configuration dialogue? If yes, does this crash happen with your webcam being connected or with your webcam not being connected?
Or do you not have any image from your webcam?

If you think this is a bug, take a look at http://bugs.kde.org and report it if it's not already reported.

After installing the qt and kde devel packages, the source compiles happily and runs no problem.

Sadly the webcam section still crashes. After playing around all day, I think this more to do with the UVC driver. I can use the luvcview utility to see that the camera is working fine, but I downloaded the Mercury msn client as a test and it doesn't find my camera at all. May have to download some more webcam apps to see whether they work.

So there might be a greater problem. Someone on the UVC forum is having the same problem with the QV Pro 5000. No one replied to him though.

Thanks for the help bauerfichtner.

If you compiled Kopete with --enable-debug, you could start kopete from console and take a look at the output when accesing the configuration dialogue. I had some problems with my webcam, too. I reported them to http://bugs.kde.org and I got help from there.

It is probably worth a try.
