KDE shortcut lag issue

I have noticed a drastic performance issue when starting programs from either the KDE desktop or KMenu. I'll use two games for example, foobillard and ppracer. If I navigate to their actual directory, these games start and run at full speed. If I start these games from either KMenu or the desktop shortcut, I get the bouncing wait cursor for about 20 seconds and the games run at a crawl during this time, then the games resume at full speed. This applies to other apps as well, but extremely noticable with 3D games. Is this some kind of configuration issue on my part or normal behavior. Thanks for any help.
