A recent discusin over on LinuxQuestions has shown that no one knows how to change or even read off the colour depth setting for a desktop X session.

Is there some uber-clever way of doing it or is it just a thing that hasn't been done yet?

We can't even work out how to do it in X besides editing the default setting in xorg.conf :-(

The point was that there seems to be no way in KDE to affect the desktop colour-depth setting. Yes, a default can be set in xorg.conf but how is that changed from within a KDE session?
So far the only way I've seen is to close X, edit the default seting and restart X.

There is plenty of info on xorg and I'm happy enough to edit it manually but that is besides the point - KDE users can select from a range of desktop resolutions but have no control over colour depth without resorting to vi.

I was exactly the same until the fateful day that I needed to check it for the sake of compatibility with earth3D.
Now I know better.

The question now is really, 'how do i log it as a nice feature for the next release of KDE'?
