strange media issues...

Hello-
Thanks in advance for whatever help you may be able to offer. I'm having some very weird media issues with KDE 3.4 on my Gentoo box (1 of 2 of them). First of all, there are no thumbnails for any media, documents, or anything, period. I have searched exhaustively and found no viable solution, I do not have crossover installed, etc. I have previews enabled, and all of that good stuff - they simply don't show up, or show up as blank, your preference. It clearly attempts to make the previews - it's just that it doesn't go so well. Furthermore, when I try to watch any kind of video files, it tries to load them and then just plays the sound. I am frankly exasperated on this issue... any advice you might have would be excellent. thanks--
