No trash can on desktop

I recently changed from GNOME to KDE and have no trashcan on my desktop. The only icons that appear by default on my desktop are for the CD drives. I don't want a simple link to the trashcan but would like something similar to the applet that can be placed on the kicker. Is there a way to do this? I thought there would be a trash can on the desktop by default? thanks

update... but not fixed yet

After looking online it seems like I can add a trash folder by doing the following:

Right click on desktop.
Create new -> Link to location (URL)

A window will appear.
Enter 'Trash' in the file name box
and
trash:/
in the URL box.

But this folder always has the full trash folder icoin whereas the one I have on the kicker changes between full and empty. Therefore, I assume its not a missing icon but some other problem?
