Tagging in digiKam on Ubuntu

Hi. I installed digiKam in Ubuntu (yes, the gnome window manager) and run it without a problem as the first (root) user.

The problem is that other users can't seem to tag any of the pictures. The pictures and their directory are chmod'ed 777, so that's not the problem. The other users can see the tags placed by the first user but cannot add tags to other images.

If they try to add tags, there is no error message. They just aren't created. Any ideas?
