KDE print mgr

Have never been able to use KDE print manager to install a printer because at end of wizard, it asks for a password. Then error message "authentication failed" user=<name> or I do not have "access to requested resources". I have read the KDE print handbook and the wizard final confirmation page in the manual is blank!!!
I always configure my printers in the Mandrake Control Center because of this, but would like to use the KDE mgr. It seems that only after I install printers with MCC, then I am able to access some printer configuration with the KDE mgr. I know this has to do with permissions, but where is this done?
