shortcut text raparound

When I create a new link to a an application on the desktop, It doesn't keep the whole name on one line. For instance, lets say I want to add a shortcut called desktop called mplayer,
when I create the shortcut the icon text looks like this:

mplay
er

How can I enlarge the text area of an icon?
