mouse periodically flies around the screen uncontrollably wildly clicking

Periodically my mouse poiinter takes on a life of its own and flies around the screen clicking anything in its path (Dell laptop, haven't had this problem with other windowing environments).

I'm told it could be down to a bad mouse driver, currently /etc/X11/xorg.conf has a mouse section as follows:

I have seen amongst configuration options a 'standard' X windows mouse driver, but cannot find my way back to it and so can't give it a go.

Any suggestions appreciated.
