I have a Mandrake 10 system and my user login has died. One day it worked as it always has, the next day it was dead. I think it may be related to a KDE problem as error messages received at various times refer to KDE, even when I am not in a KDE session.
When I start the PC and the user selection screen appears. If I select to login under a KDE or Gnome session the screen now flashes black, then blue, then I am returned to the user selection screen. Other users and root do not experience this problem.
I have logged into an IceWM session to make this post.

When I try to log into a KDE session I get the error message;
"The following installation problem was detected while trying to start KDE -
No write access to "/home/adunkin/.ICE authority"
KDE is unable to start"

I have checked file permissions for /home/adunkin. They are read, write and execute for owner.

When I tried to run KPPP under an IceWM session I got the error message;
"There was an error setting up inter-process communications for KDE. The message returned by the system was:
"Could not read network connection list.
/home/adunkin/.DCOPserver_localhost_0
Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running""

I acknowledged this message and proceeded to connect to my ISP using the KPPP GUI with success.

My system (my user profile anyway) appears to have suffered some sort of spontaneous meltdown. 2 weeks ago I replaced my Sony CD burner with an LG DVD burner. I then got rid of the DVD burner (too many software issues to be bothered with it) and replaced the original CD burner. My problems seem to have appeared incrementally since then. The first few times I used the PC after reinstalling the original CD burner I had no Gnome or KDE login problems.

I am close to a dreaded system reinstall unless a smart cookie can help me please.

Thanks, the permissions for this file must have changed somehow. I nor the other system user did it so I don't know how it happened. Not sure what the ICEauthority file does but altering the permissions worked.
