file dialog trucates file names at 20 chars

Hi I have the KDE 4 in Kubuntu. I think it's 4.1.3, the file dialog in apps such as kate and kwrite only use 20 chars for files names longer names show "..." after the 20th character. It's not an issue of field width either, because file name is the only field in the view. Any idea on how I can configure this? A suprising number of files on my system are longer than 20 chars and suprising number of them have the same first 20...

I found it. right click on the dialog and select detailed view. Might be worth while to make detailed view the default....
