Locale setting annoyance in KSpread

I was hoping to register here under my usual web handle, but haven't heard back to my requests for help on that one, so I hope that I have better luck with this problem.

I am in New Zealand, but the language settings for KDE only offer en_US. The problem with is that in spreadsheets, the "currency" setting replaces the "$" with "NZD", as in this screenshot:


I seem to remember having been unable to figure out how to fix this from the very first incarnation of KOffice I used, several years ago. So if anybody can provide pointers to how to get rid of NZD and replace it with "$", I'd be grateful.
