Smaller tray icons

I use the tray to hide the increasing amount of programs that I run on the same desktop etc. The problem is that a I can't find a way to make the tray icons smaller. The kicker panel is 52 and the tray icons fit on two rows, but with opera 9.0 beta the icons from the tray fit on single line, extending the tray very much. As temporar solution I chose the hide some icons as opera. It also has a kind of inconsistent behaviour, cause if you enlarge the panel and reduce it back the icons fit again in two rows.
Enjoy

Another solution may be to add another panel atop the normal one and add your extra applications to it. Once configured, it can remain hidden; just open it when you need it by clicking on the hide button (left or right is selectable).

Right click on the Panel, select Add to Panel > Panel >Panel

Right click on the new Panel to configure its hiding options, then add your applications to it. The new panel can be customized further by reducing its width or height independently of the main Panel, However, the kicker look seems to be linked to both.
