Can't install any theme managers

I've tried installing every KDE theme manager I could find (KDM and a few others) but none of them show up. I've tried both installing them from binaries and also by building, and they all seem to install fine, but nothing comes of it; no new entries in System Settings, and seemingly no new apps installed. Am I looking in the wrong place? Or could something else be wrong? Thanks!

Do you mean theme managers or themes?

I mean theme managers, like kdmtheme-1.2.2 and kthememanager-0.4.

But maybe the problem goes beyond this - I installed SeaMonkey with the ./seamonkey-installer command, but it didn't show up in K Menu - is there something else I need to do to make things fully install? The SeaMonkey directory is there and all, but how to I add things to K Menu?

EDIT: Well I figured out how to add it manually, but not with an icon, and also I can't get the -height property to work. Regardless, I think I'm sticking with Konqueror because of how damn fast it loads, but I'd like to know for the future, being new to Linux.

somethimes applications that you compile by hand or install manualy don't show up in kmenu.
That is because the creator of the package did not supply the files that are needed for inclusion in kmenu.

You can add them manually by starting kmenuedit and filling in the correct forms.

and you can start the application by typing it's command into konsole.

OK, glad it's not my fault they aren't showing up. But how do I give them an icon to use in K Menu? EDIT: Never mind, figured that out

And any ideas about the theme managers?

at least the KDM theme manager should appear in kcontrol.
If not, then i guess it is installed in the wrong location, or the installation of the application did not create the .desktop files needed for inclusion in kcontrol.

Try to find out where kdm theme manager got installed.

/usr/share/app-install/desktop/kdmtheme.desktop
/usr/share/applications/kde/kdmtheme.desktop

Well, that does look OK

Is kdmtheme alone in the directories, or do they contain about all kde applications?

/usr/share/app-install/desktop/kdmtheme.desktop contains a very large number of files, all ending with ".desktop". These seem to be all sorts of applications.

/usr/share/applications/kde/kdmtheme.desktop contains a much smaller amount, but still probably at least 50. These seem to be settings categories, and a few apps built into KDE.

Is there an application to run a .desktop in? Just trying to run it, I get a "command not found" error.

If it was working, it'd be its own category in -

OHHHH. I totally know what happened. I haven't been using Control Center at all, but "System Settings, which is what is listed in KMenu. Control Center isn't there at all. Opening up a terminal and typing "kcontrol" opens the Control Center, complete with both theme managers I installed.

Brilliant.

Now, any idea why System Settings is there? Is it because I installed KDE over Ubuntu? I also realized earlier that I've been using Terminal instead of Konsole... that was causing a few issues as well.

Thanks, though - I'll have to keep these things in mind.

EDIT: Well, here's to me not knowing what KDM was. I thought these were total-KDE theme managers, so when I download archives from kde-look.org I could actually install them somehow... does that not exist?

Oh - the other theme manager is actually a theme manager, and it takes .kth files from http://www.kde-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=8 . Decent.

Quoted

Now, any idea why System Settings is there?

It's an attempt of kubuntu to create a more simple configuration manager for novice users.

The problem with it is that it is different compared to other kde installations and that it only shows some configuration options, not all of them.

kdm theme manager can be used to manage themes for the login screen.
