Some KMail Questions

I'm starting to use KMail to handle my e-mails (I'm not the e-mail type of person so this is a new venture for me). I have a few questions about it though. I'm not sure if these questions are Kubuntu Dapper-only (my distro) questions or general KMail questions, but I just posted it here to be safe. Grin Btw, I'm using Gmail, as it is the only e-mail account with free POP access.

1. I have made a sub-folder in KMail's Inbox and made some filter rules to redirect some e-mails directly into it. I did this so that e-mail coming from a mailing list would automatically be placed in the proper folder. However, my problem is that the KMail notification in the system tray only displays the number of new mails in the main Inbox only. So if I have no new e-mails in the Inbox, but have 5 new ones in the sub-folder, the system tray icon doesn't display any new e-mails. Is there a way to make the KMail system tray icon display the number of new e-mails in both Inbox and it's subfolders?

2. When KMail fetches my e-mail, I configured KMail to leave the messages on the server. However, although I want KMail to keep the messages in Gmail (for backup), I also want the e-mails that it fetched to be marked as read, so that I don't have to manually mark them in Gmail. IIRC, Thunderbird has this feature, so I'm wondering if KMail has it, too. Or is it some setting in Gmail?

3. Once in a while, I log into a GNOME session, just to have a "balanced" view of the GNOME/KDE situation. When in GNOME, I prefer to stick to GNOME apps (except for KTorrent and Amarok, for which I could find no suitable replacements). So when it comes to e-mail clients, I try to use Evolution. However, I noticed that there were some e-mail messages that Evolution was able to fetch (but didn't mark as read), which KMail doesn't. So I was thinking that maybe if some other e-mail client already downloaded the e-mail, KMail just ignores it. Is this the default behavior? I want KMail to still be my default and primary e-mail app and let it fetch all my e-mails. But I also want to try out Evolution, without fear that it will interfere with KMail.

If anyone has any ideas how I can address these issues, I'd be very grateful indeed.

Right click the folder in question and load it's properties. Make sure the upper checkbox is checked.

Thank you so much for that tip.

GMail can archive mails that were accessed with POP. This is the way intended by Google to backup your mail. The mails are deleted from the inbox and saved as conversations in "All Mail".
Not directly the answer to your question but another way.
