kde3.5.3 not starting correct after compiling

Hi

I have installed kde3.5.3 using konstruct tool

After completion I have added the following to my .bash_profile :
export QTDIR=~/kde3.5.3
export KDEDIR=~/kde3.5.3
export KDEDIRS=~/kde3.5.3
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=~/kde3.5.3/lib
export PATH=~/kde3.5.3/bin:$PATH

When I login and get to the loading Desktop stage the system stalls for a minutte whereafter a completely blank desktop is show, no menu no nothing, and I can't logout again! At this point I use the power button on my computer and it shuts down normally.

Can anyone please give me a hint what I am missing here.

Morty

RE: kde3.5.3 not starting correct after compiling

I got the same while updating with smart through the gui (didn't do and bash profile stuff). I eventually got it working by upgrading from a command shell (ctrl-alt-f1, init 3, smart upgrade, init 5). but it looked soo fugly I thought it was still broke. starting to look like it's just the included styles are all horrible though. if you like good looking styles like plastik, or just like a choice, stick with 3.5.1.

UPDATE: damn my foolishness for thinking everyone uses suse  but if youdo, i did get it working eventually. see this thread.

Thanks for your suggestion.

I think I will stay with the old install for now.
