Don't if there are still people interested in a GPL football (soccer) game, but I'm working on one too.
I started it a few times ago (2/3 weeks), and if some people are interested, any help is welcome :)

here's a screenshot :

Currently there are not a lot of stuff implemented :
OPAL for physic engine (easier than ODE and with a lot of usefull feature), OpenGL for graphic and SDL for timer/thread and input (and also would be cross platform).
The ball can move and collide with of course ground and goal :)

Hi
I'm new in the forum.
I heard you are considering to build a soccer game (e.g. fifa) with others in the forum....is it true?
About your 3d model....what a beatiful grass!!
Well, if someone is thinking about building a new soccer game, I would be in staff. I'm not very expert in linux programming but I just wrote code for windows with DirectX.

bye

P.S. I downloaded the latest version of Maya 4 Win.

Hi!

Yes I'm still working on this (with another helpers ;))
If you have windows programming skills it can be useful, as I don't have any, to make the windows version ;)

I need help for moddeling object too (character animation for example).

Well, if you want to know more, just mail me ;)

a newer screenshot.
Even if it's not visible, the nets can move ;) (and yes there's a problem on the UV texture).

I don't think you can use the names without their permission. Also the names can not be GPL probably. Team-names are trademarks.

You might concider 2 seperate licences, one for the actual game (GPL) and one for players, team-names etc. you make a different licence (probably the respective copywrites), better talk to a lawyer/solicitor about that...

Oh, nice to see some screens! Hope it is still in development.

I don't think that someone will be mad if the playernames are not real or the teams. Leave it open to change the name and ppl will change them if they want real names.

Hi!

Still some dev on it, but I really need someone who are able to make some skeletal model (for player)...
I don't have a lot of time for it by now, but I'm still on it!

Here are some of the lastest screenshot (not a lot of new, just a better looking skybox, and some improvement on nets physics...)

The problem is "Soccer" isn't mainstream popular sport in United States and naturally soccer games are made by japanese or european people and the market is too small.

I know jack about game design. What I can do is put my wholehearted support for this project. Maybe once my skills are up to speed i'll come back and help.
There is only one path and one path only.
That is the path on relentless struggle.

Well anyways... Not many happens here recently it seems. I hope the work's still in progress ?

There should be more programmers engaged there in my opinion, that would help to roll things faster I think. Besides, the whole work wouldn't be at one man's hands then...

Well sad to say but it looks nothing's happening here :(. Is the project still alive ? Has any work been done out there ?

I's not dead, just sleeping!!

I'm currently very busy at work.
But I still need other people (for models and coding), I don't want to setup a sourceforge project yet (as it needs a lot of information).

I'm glad to hear something from you. I'm also happy to hear the project's still at development. I hope you'll find a staff to help you so as to make you able not to make it just on your own.

My help offer is still available of course :) (the one i have mentioned in an email)

Ok, I've put everything (sourcecode + some ugly mesh) on an svn server, which is available to anonymous.
Here's the adress : http://OpenSVN.csie.org/OpenFootball

to get the code just do a
svn co http://OpenSVN.csie.org/OpenFootball
this will create an OpenFootball directory whith everything inside.

Then you need Cg, SDL installed. Can't remember if the build of opal and ode include in the source is valid or not, just try to compile with classic
./configure
make
(don't do make install ;)

then from OpenFootball dir just run src/main, and you should see something.

you can move the ball with the arrow pad, move it up with h, and move the camera (to fix position only) with a, z, e, r.
I should be hard to compile!!! I will clean the code, and then make it easy to compile.

it's a draft code!!! (very very ugly)

There's no need to start from scratch:

RG Pro Hockey would provide much of the GPL source code necessary to
make a sports 3D simulation I would think:

http://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~hassana/rgph/screenshots.html

Just modify the physics a bit, and update the player models and field.

Yoda soccer:
http://yodasoccer.sourceforge.net/
is a good quality GPL football game for linux too which might help.

Is the project still sleeping? I must say i'm impressed of what you did untill now. I use Blender 3D for 3D modeling so I guess I could help you with models and animations and my friend could help you with textures. He is very good with photoshop. I've added you to msn. We can talk there.
