SUSE 10.0 and Brother Printer MFC-420cn

Still trying to setup Brother MFC-420cn Printer. The printer is attached to another computer running Windows XP Pro. The printer is already shared with 2-3 other home computers. The Linux machine I'm on right now is a new setup with running dual boot with Windows XP Pro too.

I finally did get setup on the above SUSE Linux machine to locate the shared printer on the Windows XP Pro machine. That was an accomplishment by itself.

By using "loy" sign-on rather than anonymous it did go thru to 192.168.1.103 rather than computer name of SOYO and locate the Printer.

But now another issue. After clicking on the appropriate printer a list of printers is shown, but my Brother MFC-420cn isn't in the list. Also not on "Other" List. So I then click on "Other" and get the Pop Up box "Select Driver". Or asks for PPD Program. I don't have such a program. Can't locate such. And naturally no drivers are on this Linux Machine for this printer. They are on the Windows CD that came with the printer.

So where do I go from here my friends? At least we're getting closer. Thanks.

Don't know if you solved this, but if you haven't, goto http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/index.htm and
download the LPR and CUPS wrapper drivers for your printer. Install the LPR then the CUPS wrapper. When you're done it should show your printer already installed. By default it'll assume it's on USB though. You need to change that so LLinux knows where the printer is. On Mandriva, you select "Edit" option from the CUPS admin tool and select the connection option and tell it to find printers on the local network (as opposed to locally attached) and it'll find it.

You may have to tell it to look specifically for SMB printer servers (since your printer is attached to a Windoze box). I've used that option in the past, I've installed my printer on a network using the ethernet port with Windows and Linux (Mandriva) workstations and it works great.

Hi Brimun,
You said "When you're done it should show your printer already installed. By default it'll assume it's on USB though. You need to change that so LLinux knows where the printer is."
I have already done that step, and I can see my printer Brother MFC420CN there, but I use network connection instead of USB. Now the problem is I can not set it to NETWORK connection.
As you said, I select the "Modify Printer" (I use suse10), then which device I need to choose from the list? There are many kinds of devices, I tried all(Except the Parallel Port, SCSI Priner, Serial Port, USB Printer) but no one works. What am I gonna do?
Here is the list:
----------------------------------
AppSocket/HP JetDirect
Internet Printing Protocol (http)
Internet Printing Protocol (ipp)
LPD/LPR Host or Printer
Parallel Port #1 (CANON)
Parallel Port #1 (EPSON)

Any suggestion will be appreciated.
