Football / Soccer Simulation Game for Linux?

Hey,

I'm toying with the possibility of a Soccer Simulation Game written within the KDevelop environment, hopefully made available on Linux, Windows and Mac (though I'm unsure about the Mac environment). The program will hopefully be made available as a Beta within a year, and will be a community project, published under the GPL.

I hope to include all the features normally associated with games such as FIFA, ProEvolution and TIF, such as player likenesses, etc. but hopefully using the GPL arrangement to allow the community to work on things such as advanced ball control and physics, which are often over looked by the big game coding companies in the rush to get a game into boxes and onto shop shelves.

Within a month, I'm hoping to set up a website with a forum and Wiki pages, and eventually make the source RPMs available, but for the time being I would be interested in gauging interest in both potential users of this game and potential coders. Of course, if their is no forthcoming community, I will begin regardless in the hope that it may develop.

Yes, I think there's a need for one, because all the existing ones are old and unmaintained. What sort of simulation will this be? Will you actually be able to play as one of the players? Also, please try to not use RPMs only. They never seem to work. You should offer a installer, like the Loki installer.

They game will primarily be an 'on-the-ball' simulation, with emphasis on realistic control and physics. I envisage a 'scenery library' online, where users can create their own models for grounds and players, and upload them. This is where the open-source arrangement really will come in useful. For instance, if you look at FIFA 2004, all of the smaller grounds have unrealistic, generic stands, and even some of the bigger grounds, such as St James Park, do not seem realistic interpretations of real-life.

YES! Linux needs definitely some good soccer game! Will it be a 2d or a 3d game?
What about the real player names? Will it be legal to use them (or isn't that a problem with a GPL game)? Is multiplayer planned (how far are you with coding this game? Can you perhaps provide some screenshots already?).

I would be a user of this game.

Ah, just what I was lookfing for so far. It's 2D, but from what I can interpret from JosephBoyd's comments about models and realism, it sounds as if it's going to be 3D. Thanks for the link though. :)

Hi All,

Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been completely side-tracked the past few weeks, but still found some time to get some coding done. The game is in the very early stages of coding, but hopefully I'll be able to get some screenshots to you soon.

The game will, of course be 3D. The game is going to be based around the idea's in FIFA Football and Pro Evolution Soccer. I'm unsure as to the legal issues surrounding player aliases, but when I do have an idea then I'll get back so you  .

Thanks for the update. Don't worry about the player alias too much though. It's just an extra feature, and I'm sure we'd happy just to have a nice game that looks good and even better gameplay. :)

They look ok, but I prefer real soccer games (no cars) in 3d :) IOS-HL looks ok but the gameplay is.... :)

Hey,

I was wondering whether there is anyone on this forum who would provide a small amount of webspace on their server to host the site for GLSoccer?

The site, until downloads become available (by which point I hope to have my own server), will be relatively low on bandwidth usage and will only require around 10-20mb of webspace...

I hope that I can therefore get screenshots and news to you without having to use the forums, and possibly set up a forum dedicated to GLSoccer.

Perhaps a free server could work too: e.g. http://coolfreepages.com/ (with php support, ftp, 50 MB)

Hey all,

Yes the project is still alive and kicking (excuse the pun...) I was working on the ball physics model, when I decided to back-up the project and take some time off for the summer. I am in the process of setting up my website, so the source code and list of micro projects for others to work on should be accessible soon.

I'll post here with details on the website address in approx. 2-3 weeks time.

Apart from that,
Slan go foill...
