I need my KDM back

I am trying Mandrake 9.1 RC 2 and they have abolished KDM in favor of some ugly Mandrake home grown login screen. Does anyone know how to configure X to use KDM? I figured that this was a look issue, so don't flame me for posting it here. Thanks.

Mandrake 9.1 Display Manager change...

I hope you've already discovered how to change from Mandrake's newly 'modified' version of KDM.

But Incase you haven't, or if someone else wants to know...

Just open up Mandrake Control Center (mcc) and go down to the "Hardware" section. You will find a Display Manager chooser.

(Anyone at mandrake want to explain why this is under hardware and not system???)

Anyway, when you run the display manager chooser you should get the options GDM (GNOME Display Manager), KDM (KDE Display Manager), MdkKDM (Mandrake Display Manager), XDM (X Display Manager)...

Just choose the one you want and there you are... Click OK and your set.

You can also change this in the system config file (can't remember which one) in the etc folder...

And it's not THAT ugly... at least not the version I'm running... unless you compare it to the new GDM which, (with appologies to the KDM team) is considerably better looking...(it's very polished)[/i]

Stupid thing doesn't work

Thanks, I tried that but the settings change never applied and so nothing took effect. I hope they fix that bug by the final, probably not knowing them since they are in debt up to their eyeballs and time to market is more important than producing something that works.

You are especially right about GDM looking hot. I would just be happy to get KDM back. I don't like MdkDM at all. Also, have you noted the little bug with the text below the icons on the desktop? There is a significant gap between icon and text. Any thoughts? These are my two largest concerns so far with this release, besides the loss of dotNET style in kcontrol (this is a KDE problem and it occurs frequently, and I assume it will return in 3.1.1 or an update to qt).

I will try the config file hack in /etc next. Thanks for your help.

Hard coding the Displaymanager and Icons...

Well if you don't mind the gnome login, and the MCC isn't working, you can force it by editing the /etc/sysconfig/desktop file and changing KDM to GNOME... You can also find the KDE KDM package in cooker, and install it, then remove the MdkKDM package...

As for the icons, I saw another post somewhere about the index.desktop files for the theme you are using having an incorrect setting in it... I had the same problem, and but from some reason it's not a problem now... ;)

Here's the message thread...
